What Is Puppy Yoga? Everything You Need to Know

Puppy yoga class with puppies roaming between the mats

Puppy yoga is a beginner-friendly yoga class where puppies roam freely around the room while you practice. At Pups&Yoga, a class lasts 60 minutes: 30 minutes of guided yoga, 15 minutes of yoga while the puppies roam free, then 15 minutes of play and cuddles. No yoga experience is needed. You just come in comfortable clothes; we provide the mats.

What is puppy yoga?

Puppy yoga mixes a gentle yoga class with time spent around young puppies. The yoga part is slow and accessible: stretches, simple poses like cat-cow, child's pose and downward dog, and breathing. The puppies are not "part of the workout": they wander between the mats, sniff, nap, climb on laps and sometimes join a stretch. Most people come for the puppies and leave surprised by how relaxed they feel.

Pups&Yoga started in Montréal as the original puppy yoga studio and now runs classes in 10 cities across Canada, the USA and Spain.

What happens in a class?

1. Guided yoga (30 minutes)

An instructor leads a gentle flow so everyone can settle in. Every pose has an easy version; you can skip anything at any time.

2. Yoga with the puppies (15 minutes)

The puppies come in and roam freely while the class continues with calm poses. Expect a puppy on your mat, on your back during child's pose, or asleep next to you.

3. Play and cuddles (15 minutes)

Mats away: this part is all about the puppies. Sit on the floor, play, cuddle and take photos. Our team stays with the puppies the whole time.

What to wear to puppy yoga

  • Comfortable clothes you can move in: leggings or joggers and a T-shirt or sweater. You'll spend time on the floor.
  • Clothes that can take a little fur and the odd playful nibble: avoid delicate fabrics, long dangling jewelry or loose drawstrings.
  • Socks or bare feet on the mat.
  • No strong perfume: puppies have sensitive noses.

What to bring

Just yourself. We provide yoga mats. A water bottle and a small towel are welcome. Doors open 15 minutes before each class: arriving a bit early gives you time to settle in.

Who can do puppy yoga?

Almost everyone. The class is designed for beginners, and every pose can be adapted.

  • Age: 13 and older; kids aged 8 to 12 come with an adult. For anyone under 18, a parent or guardian accepts the waiver. (Marbella: under 18s come with a parent or guardian.)
  • Allergies: if you're allergic to dogs, this class is probably not for you; ask your doctor if you're unsure.
  • Pregnancy, injuries: the yoga is gentle, but talk to your doctor first and tell the instructor before class.

Is puppy yoga safe for the puppies?

Yes, and it's something we take seriously. Our puppies come from ethical breeder partners and are typically 8 to 14 weeks old, the age when gentle socialization is good for them. They are supervised at all times, they can rest whenever they want, and they never do back-to-back classes. Participants follow the team's instructions and handle the puppies calmly and gently.

How much does puppy yoga cost?

A Pups&Yoga class costs about $46 to $48 CAD in Canada, $55 USD in Boston and Miami, and €60 in Marbella. You book a specific date and time online, and you can also offer a class as a gift card.
